We loaded in the vans sometime around 8:00 and arrived at the launch site sometime near 10:30 after a short stop at Decision Point near the confluence of the Marias and the Missouri River where Lewis and Clark had to decide which river was the Missouri. Our first sojourn on the river was sunny, pleasant, with no breeze, but hot. The scenery was beautiful as we floated by immense sandstone cliffs and white stone spires silently telling their story. “May 31, 1805 The hills and river cliffs we passed today exhibit a most romantic appearance.—Meriwether Lewis”. Pelicans and eagles were sighted along the way. After paddling 6 miles, we stopped for lunch at Little Sandy Creek. Then we proceeded on for another 8 miles to Lewis and Clark Scenic campground at Eagle Grove. Our tents were already set up as the outfitters arrived earlier in the day and made camp. Some members ventured out on a 1 1/2 hour hike to Coulee Canyon. Others rested and viewed the beautiful scenery while enjoying the company of new friends.
The Montana Outfitters provided a delicious steak dinner, corn on the cob, mixed salad, and cheesecake for dessert on real dishes…no paper plates! After dinner, Dr. Jay Buckley provided an interesting presentation on little known facts about Lewis and Clark.
Darkness set in like a light switch and everyone headed to their tents for a good night’s sleep. The big skies of Montana were filled with stars that were seemed so close we felt we could reach right out and touch the Big Dipper. A gentle breeze blowing through our tents finally lulled us to sleep.
We arose early, rested and hungry and enjoyed a french toast breakfast with sausage, yogurt and fruit juice. We were well on our way into Day 2 of this adventure by 9:00.
