While it’s not completely about the Lewis and Clark Trail, I thought some people might be interested in my blog about great sites for photography in South Dakota. I try to point out places with interesting subject matter, best times to be there for good light, weather trends, etc. And I do (and will in the future) cover the Missouri River and the Lewis and Clark Trail and surrounding areas.

Check it out at www.dakotagraph.blogspot.com.

Chad,
You are a great promoter of tourism in South Dakota! No wonder you are the senior photographer for the state tourism office. It really made me want to come up and visit, and do a photography vacation. You shared a lot of professional tips in this blog, which makes it very interesting as well as beautiful.
I liked your advice about watching out for vehicle traffic when taking a photo. I like taking road pictures, and I definitely need someone watching out for me. I remember contacting you for permission to use photos from South Dakota tourism in my book, and how helpful you were.

My scariest moment in photography came with a great big old buffalo in Custer State Park in South Dakota. He was up on a hill across the road, and then, the next thing I knew, he was down the hill and very quickly moving in my direction!

I had the camera on a tripod, and Henry was in our car parked pretty far back to stay out of camera range. I moved very quickly back to the car myself, abandoning the camera on the tripod. When I was safely in the car, we drove up and retrieved the gear. The buffalo walked past us and he was as big as our big old car, and he gave me a look as if to say “I scared you pretty good!”  And he certainly did. I have never taken chances like that again. I did learn my lesson.

I would love to come up to South Dakota again. We have so many great memories.

I’m glad you enjoyed South Dakota, but I hope you don’t find more stories like that one to tell! If you check back on my blog from time to time, I will continue to add information that I hope is interesting and useful for travelers. Don’t forget to say hi when you are on this part of the trail!
