St Joseph Missouri Has a Unique Combination of Museums
The St Joseph Museums complex consists of the St Joseph Museum, with an outstanding collection of over 3,000 prehistoric and historic Indian artifacts, and a very nice Lewis and Clark exhibit. Shown here are exhibits of Lewis’s Woodpecker and Clark’s Nutcracker and some beautiful Sioux artifacts. There is also a small Black History Archives. But what makes the museum complex unique is the Glore Psychiatric Museum, illustrating how mental illness has been treated over the centuries. The three museums are housed in the old "State Lunatic Asylum #2." This is a museum experience you won’t forget. Shown here is the "Ice Water Cannon" treatment center, an early form of shock therapy.
St Joseph has also combined their new Visitor Center and Coffee Shop with the East Hills Public Library. It is an impressive facility, located at 3rd Street and Frederick Avenue just a few blocks off the interstate and near the museum buildings. Other wonderful museums in St Joseph are the Pony Express National Museum, the Patee House Museum National Landmark, the Sally Rand Museum and the Jesse James Museum. The St Joe motto is "Where the Pony Express began and Jesse James ended."
